ADSL broadband — do I need it?

Broadband ADSL allows you to connect to the Internet at extremely fast speeds while still allowing you to use the phone at the same time. ADSL:

  • Uses your existing phone line. No longer do you need one phone line for calls and another for the Internet.
  • Connection is always on so you don’t need to dialup each time you connect
  • Loads web pages up to 30 times faster than dialup Internet allowing you to view those large pages you couldn’t view on dialup.
  • Is excellent for viewing streaming media, downloading music and video clips, or video conferencing live with someone on the other side of the world.

Speeds

Also referred to as line speed, this tells you how fast you can send and receive information with your Broadband connection. There are generally 3 speeds you can choose from, including:

  • 256/64k: The 256 plans are an entry level Broadband service. It is excellent for high speed web browsing and email, and small multimedia content. It is capable of running up to 4.5 times faster than your standard dialup Internet.
  • 512/128k: The 512 plan is great for everyone. It is excellent for high speed web browsing and email, multimedia content, and online games. It is up to 9 times faster than your standard dialup Internet.
  • 512k/512k: This new plan is excellent for those who require a fast upload speed as well as downloads. This includes gamers, and people who wish to run their own servers like email and web servers.
  • 1500/256k: The 1500 plan is for those wanting the fastest Internet speeds. Excellent for everything on the Internet, including web browsing and email, multimedia content and games. It is up to 26 times faster than your standard dialup Internet!

The line speed is measured in kbps, which stands for kilobits per second.

How Long Does It Take?

After you have applied for broadband ADSL, your application must be sent to Telstra for provisioning. Provisioning of a new ADSL service can takes generally between 3-5 working days. Occassionaly it can take longer in rural areas, which will require your physical phone line to be upgraded.

How Much Will My First Bill Be?

Your first bill will contain the charges for your setup fee, first month of broadband ADSL access, and hardware fees if you ordered any line filters or modems/routers from us. As an example the first bill for a Small Business 256 plan with no additional hardware will be $132.00 signup fee and $79.95 first month access fee.

When Will I Be Charged?

Your first invoice will be issued when we receive a service activation date. The invoice will be issued to a nominated email account and must be paid in full before your account can be activated. We currently accept direct deposit and all major credit cards (payable online via our secure interface).

What is 'shaped' data?

Shaping data is our way of limiting subscribers who go over their download limit. Unlike other ISPs, who frequently charge hidden costs, we simply reduce the speed at which you can access the Internet. We feel this approach works best for customers, as there are no hidden costs, and you are still able to access vital services (i.e. email or online banking).
