Yes, you can get home internet in Canberra without the nbn. Canberra has a second fixed-line network, the Vision Network (formerly TransACT), which delivers G.fast and VDSL2 broadband over its own infrastructure and is sold by several providers including Infinite. The other alternatives are 5G home internet from the mobile networks and Starlink satellite. Which one suits you depends on what your address can get.
The Vision Network: Canberra’s other fixed-line network
The Vision Network began as TransACT, which built its network across Canberra from the early 2000s. It is now operated by wholesale provider Vision Network and is completely separate from the nbn, which is owned and operated by nbn co.
In Canberra the Vision Network is a fibre-to-the-node network. Fibre runs to a node in a pit close to your home and your existing copper phone line carries the signal the last stretch. Vision Network offers G.fast at up to 1 Gbps in Canberra, alongside VDSL2. Region Canberra reported in November 2024 that around 88,000 premises in about 70 Canberra suburbs could access the network.
Who sells Vision Network internet in Canberra?
Vision Network is a wholesale network, so you buy the service from a retail provider. Its Find a Provider page lists these providers for Canberra (checked 25/10/2026):
- Infinite
- iiNet
- MyOwn Tel
- Telair
- TPG
- Vodafone
Infinite is Canberra-owned and operated. Our Vision plans are G.fast up to 1 Gbps/100 Mbps from $89.95 a month and VDSL2 at 25/10, 50/20 and 100/40 Mbps from $59.95 a month. Prices include GST and there is no lock-in contract.
Is the Vision Network faster than the nbn?
It depends on the nbn technology at your address. Homes on nbn fibre to the node (FTTN) or fibre to the curb (FTTC) are limited to 100/40 Mbps on any plan. G.fast on the Vision Network reaches up to 1 Gbps download and around 100 Mbps upload, depending on the length of copper between the node and your home.
| Connection | Maximum speed (download/upload) |
|---|---|
| nbn FTTN and FTTC | 100/40 Mbps |
| nbn FTTP and HFC | Up to 2000 Mbps download on the fastest tiers |
| Vision G.fast | Up to 1 Gbps/100 Mbps |
| Vision VDSL2 | Up to 100/40 Mbps |
Infinite’s own G.fast customers averaged 694 Mbps down and 90 Mbps up in our 2026 sync speed data, so where a home on FTTN or FTTC can get G.fast it is usually considerably faster. If your home already has nbn fibre to the premises or HFC, the nbn’s faster tiers can match or exceed G.fast. The choice then comes down to plan, price and provider.
Other options: 5G home internet and Starlink
5G home internet uses the mobile network instead of a fixed line. Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and TPG sell it where their 5G coverage reaches. It needs good 5G signal at your address. Speeds vary with signal strength and how busy the local tower is.
Starlink is a satellite service that works almost anywhere with a clear view of the sky. It is most useful where fixed-line options are limited, such as rural properties on the edge of the ACT.
How to choose
- Check your address first. Our address checker shows whether your home can get nbn, Vision G.fast or Vision VDSL2.
- Find out your nbn technology. FTTN and FTTC are limited to 100/40 Mbps. FTTP and HFC can reach faster tiers.
- Ask where your nbn service is connected. Many providers carry Canberra nbn services back to Sydney. Infinite delivers its nbn services right here in Canberra.
- Think about upload speed if you work from home, back up to the cloud or stream video.
- Compare support and contract terms as well as speed and price.
